Get ready for more Upness on the next R.E.M. release, entitled Reveal, due out in May ñ according to frontman Michael Stipe. In typical fairy logic fashion, he explains, "If the last one was like Mars, this one is like Neptune" (oh, to see the look on Peter Buck's and Mike Mills' faces during such nonsense-speak). Stipe continues, "This one is much more experimental [than Up], but within that, there's a lot more pop, and a lot more melody." Judging by the sound of the new single, "Imitation of Life," the man ain't lying.
"Imitation of Life" is a mid-tempo melodic tune, reminiscent of the beautiful song, "The Great Beyond," that they recorded for the soundtrack to Man on the Moon last year. The new single sounds more like "R.E.M." than anything off the Up album. Reveal is the second album that the band has recorded as a trio (after drummer Bill Berry left in 1997 following a life-threatening brain aneurysm).
