Northern Ireland's favorite sons, Ash, return with "Shining Light," their first new music
since 1998's Nu-Clear Sounds. The single finds the quartet in decidedly poppier territory
than their last album. Whether this is a factor of age or natural progression is yet to be discovered,
as either could be true. Although they had earlier pop moments ("Goldfinger", "Girl From Mars"),
Nu-Clear Sounds was a far more rock-leaning album; however, the Ash pendulum
seems to be swinging back to the pop side, with lead singer Tim Wheeler's vocals on
display here, as the guitars have been toned down. Is alterna-pop stardom on the horizon? The
climate may just be right for Ash this time around.
