One of the most anticipated all girl punk/rock n roll tours rolled through the big apple this weekend at Bowery Ballroom ñ THE DONNAS w/ Bratmobile. It delivered ñ big time, all night long! With all of the crap out there today, one can easily forget how you can still go out and enjoy a night of pure chick rock n roll. I have seen the THE DONNAS twice before this and I have all their records ñ I couldnít wait to see the girls again ñ because this time, they are legal !!! I was very curious about Bratmobile as well ñ (an all chick punk band that I donít know about ñ how dare you !) So despite my warning from that raging Neanderthal at the Ashcroft gig, I grabbed my digital camera and headed back to the Bowery Ballroom to rock!
To begin Bratmobile was right on the money with their pure punk display. I feel bad for the kids these days..they never got to see the Ramones or The Cramps, but I sat watching this band feeling , ok ñ well at least they can get a taste of what punk should be like. The lead singer, Allison is one of the best out there. She is a cross between Kate Pierson and Poison Ivy (B52ís and The Cramps respectively.) She was jumping around the whole gig and her dry wit in between songs was stunning ñ I even appreciated the hair under her arms by the 5th song as she got the entire crowd to do the bunny hop. Erin Smith on guitar with one of the most unique ñ old school 70ís esque sounds going. What was that black oval guitar she was playing? Never saw that style before ñ but it sounded perfect. I am looking for it today on ebay. The keyboardist was king ñ doing her dances with her wonder woman styled outfit with strips of blue duck tape on the chest and crouch area. You canít forget Molly Neuman on the drums, she rules. One of the coolest things about LOOKOUT Records - their employees are actually in bands too AND on tour! Folks Molly and Erin work at Lookout! ñ love it ñ love it - No wonder why I get their voice mails for most of the year.
THE DONNAS came on shortly after ñ and they rocked. The new album The Donnas Turn 21 rocks ñ and the girls came through with no holds barred. You either had to rock or get the hell out of the venue. They opened with track 1 off the new album "Are You Gonna Move It For Me" ñ we all answered, yes and started rocking the joint and a mini mosh ensued. I almost got knocked down as I was tossing white roses at Donna R and Donna A. More of the hits were included like "Skintight", "Doin Donuts", "Hook It Up" and "Hyperactive" from last yearís Get Skintight LP as well some classics "Checking It Out" and "You Make Me Hot" from AMERICAN TEENAGE ROCK N ROLL MACHINE. They even pulled some gems from their debut self titled album "Letís Go Mano" and "Hey Iím Gonna Be Your Girl." All in all ñ they ruled. Their skills are getting better and better. Donna R on lead guitar in her converse and denim mini skirt ñ was tearing up her Gibson with powerful rhythm and lead guitar while Donna C on drums is a cross between "Animal" from the Muppets and Marky Ramone from The Ramones. They look great and they bring it..everytime! Backstage ñ fresh up in new outfits and smelling of freshly applied lip balm, the girls were very friendly and talking about the tour and what bands and records they like. I was hoping to buy the ladies a drink since they are legal now ñ but it was all Coca Cola last night. So I stuck with my water and chatted up drum styles with Donna C (aka Tori) and we ended the night with this photo. Donna R (aka Allison) is still my favorite ñ but Donna C gets my vote as most improved Donna. The tour rolls into Boston next Ödonít miss it !!!!!!!
