New York Rangers captain and 5 time Stanley Cup champion Mark Messier was officially declared a "Loser" by Brooklyn native/plumber Nick Fabbricante at the 8:07 mark of the second period during Saturday's match-up against the Detroit Red Wings.
In a ceremony that contained little fanfare, Fabbricante loudly proclaimed "Messier! YOU LOSER!" over the hushed Garden crowd, after Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom intercepted a Messier pass and cleared the zone. In an admirable display of humility, Messier continued play, neither pausing to make an acceptance speech, bask in the moment of silence the solemn occasion afforded, or back check, the two time Hart Trophy winner and 14 time all-star simply skated to the bench, and took his place amongst his team mates.
Messier's new "loser" status places him in select company. Over the past 5 years, Fabbricante has awarded the distinction to an elite group of NHL players including, Brian Leech, Wayne Gretzky, Mike Richter, Theo Fluery, Adam Graves, John VanBiesbrouck, Valeri Kamensky, Peter Nedved, Sandy McCarthy, Alexi Kovalev, Brian Skrudland, Geoff Buekeboom, Niklas Sundstrum, Stephan Quintal, Mike Knuble, Rob DiMaio, Guy Herbert and Tim Taylor.
In addition to the Messier presentation, Fabbricante also bestowed the coveted "Fucking Cocksucker" award to the game's entire officiating squad and instructed a group of young girls to "shut the hell up" soon after they began a "Let's Go Rangers, Let's Go" chant.
