There are worse titles to be bestowed upon a person than "the UK Elliott Smith." That's the title
that some are tossing around the neck of Matthew Jay, a 22-year old singer songwriter from Wales,
with similar gifts to our own Mr. Smith. Actually, he's more like an amalgamation of Elliott and UK press
darling Damon Gough, a.k.a. Badly Drawn Boy, while other reference points could
include The Beatles or Simon and Garfunkel. His songs range from stripped down
acoustica to mid tempo jangly numbers; he incorporates loops, beats, bongos and samples into his sonic
stew, enabling him to write songs with a classic feel that feel fresh, not stale. Classic pop may be on his
mind, but what is emitted is a pop record with classic roots and a 2001 feel, especially as he's got one of the
best websites I've ever seen. Definitely 2001.
