College kids and slackers unite! The CMJ Music Marathon is coming to town! Well, only if you're in
NYC, but you get the drift. The yearly indie-intensive music convention will be held this year from
September 13-16 and the organizers have already roped in some tasty acts. Amongst the hundreds and
hundreds of artists that will performing over that four day period are such tasty acts as UK love children
Coldplay, the new school piano man himself, Ben Folds, emo-superstars Get Up
Kids, UK up-and-comers Starsailor and indie kingpins Unwound, as well as
Clinic, Turin Breaks and Firewater. Literally hundreds more acts will be named in
the coming weeks, so keep your eyes peeled, whatever that means.
Of all things in the entire world for Coldplay to be inspired by, Australian soap stars probably
wouldn't top the list. Little did you know, however. As their wildly successful US tour winds up and the
band heads off to Japan and Australia (to return to the States for the aforementioned CMJ show), news has
come out that the band's next US single, "Shiver," had as its inspiration Ms. Natalie Imbruglia.
Evidently, singer/songwriter Chris Martin had a huge crush on Natalie, watching her on the UK
soap Neighbors while he was growing up. 10 years later, he wrote "Shiver" about unrequited love,
but needed a focal point for his writing, and the rest, as they say, is history.
