In a shocking turn of events, Mercury Music Prize favorites, Gorillaz, have removed themselves
from consideration for this year's prize. The band has declined the nomination, in a statement from bassist
Murdoc to the New Musical Express. Murdoc, in his own inimitable style, stated that the
Mercury Prize sounded a "bit heavy" and compared it to "carrying a dead albatross around your neck for
eternity." The grizzled four-string veteran added, "why don't you nominate some other poor Muppet!" No
word on whether Gonzo or Animal are now waiting by their respective phones.
