Desert Drought

John Power has always been a big fan of the past. As a member of UK jangle stalwarts The
La's, the focus was always on '60s influenced guitar pop and in previous work with his current act,
Cast, he has always incorporated a throwback feel to his music. New single "Desert Drought" is
no exception, save for the reference points. For this single, Power and company have combined '70s soul
and funk aspects (flutes, horns, bongos) with late '90s big-beat drum patterns. This song brings the funk in
a major way, but still has the highly recognizable Power vocal stylings over the top. The '70s imagery is
continued in the video, which is Schoolhouse Rock meets Harlem circa 1973. The best part of the song,
however, is that the intro guitar line sounds like the first few notes to the classic "Monday Night Football"
theme song and that's always a good thing, as long as Bocephus doesn't start wailing "Are You
Ready For Some Football?"
