MUGGS, the producer behind multi-platinum hip-hop acts Cypress Hill and House of Pain has signed with Epitaph Records' Anti label. Mixing experimental hip-hop, electronica, drum and bass, r&b and rock, MUGGS' genre-bending solo effort is set for release in spring, 2002. MUGGS' signature style of evocative hip-hop met with critical and popular success in the early '90s. His laid-back beats were revered within and outside of the urban market, crossing over to an alternative audience. MUGGS went on to produce and remix for such noteworthy artists as Janet Jackson , U2 , George Michael, and Wu-Tang Clan. And in 1997, MUGGS released his first solo record Muggs Presents the Soul Assassins, which featured an exceptional stable of rappers rhyming over his cinematic beats.
Disillusioned with the staleness of current radio formats, MUGGS is determined to make his Anti debut an inventive record that will open the doors of music, while defining a sound that is uniquely his own. Half of the new album will be a collaborative effort with various artists from a wide variety of musical backgrounds, and the remainder will be MUGGS originals featuring a surprise female vocalist.
MUGGS commented, "I feel like this is a new age for music, so many different combos of music are coming together. I'm getting into it now as a fan and want to bring it full circle."
Epitaph's Anti label is also home to cutting edge artists Merle Haggard , Tom Waits and Tricky.
