Star Wars: Episode I ñ The Phantom Menace has set a possible record for the most time and money spent on the production of new material for a DVD. Team Lucas has poured $4 million and a year and a half producing the double-disc set, due out Oct. 16, that features seven scenes cut from the movie before they were fully produced. Approximately half of the money was reportedly spent on the truckloads of erasers needed to completely erase Jar Jar Binks.
Lucas, who had previously said that no Star Wars DVDs would be released until all six could be put out together (at least 2006), explained that there were pressures to bring Episode I to the marketplace. DVDs for the upcoming episodes II and III will be released following their theatrical runs but the original trilogy will not be seen on DVD for at least 5 years.
