Countless numbers of special guests have appeared on the countryís best social / political television satire, the Simpsons, over the years and R.E.M is the latest pop sensation to make the trip to Springfield. Everyone from the Who, to the remaining Beatles, to Brittany Spears have been transformed into yellow, four fingered, animated versions of themselves. The past three seasons have seen an almost annoying influx of special guest episodes (did I mention N*Sync) that have diluted the comic integrity of the show. In fact, it seems that since the tragic departure of the beloved Phil Hartman character, Troy McClure (who you might know from such educational films as Designated Driver ñ High School Nerd), every new episode has had a sub-par special guest. What happened to the good old days of Apuís garden in the shade with the McCartneys and the classic Hullabalooza episode with such special guests as Sonic Youth, the Smashing Pumpkins and Cypress Hill? The R.E.M. episode, which will be airing sometime around Thanksgiving, has some serious comic potential, lets hope they donít disappoint.
