In one of the most amazing, if not THE most amazing DJ sets I've ever seen, Australian
new favorites The Avalanches rocked the hizouse in San Francisco Friday night.
Making their debut SF appearance at a sold-out popscene special Friday night Live
Session, co-sponsored by LIVE 105, The Avalanches spun to a packed house in
this showcase event, and brought the damn place down.
The night was kicked off by
Dan The Automator, of Gorillaz, Deltron 3030 and
Handsome Boy Modeling School fame and his 90-minute DJ set was nothing to
scoff at either. He dropped a few of his own tunes, including the Gorillaz
breakthrough single, "Clint Eastwood" and would drop the vocals out, to hear the crowd
chanting along. At midnight sharp the duo from The Avalanches (Dexter and Robbie) hit the stage on
their four decks and it was ON. Mixing in everything from Bob Dylan to
Guns 'N' Roses to De La Soul to The Police to Daft
Punk and much more in between, they were simply incredible. No DJ attitude, no
taking themselves too seriously, just an innate ability to get a floor moving and create the
perfect party vibe. Hip hop headz, rock kidz, techno freaks, pop lovers, everyone getting
down and loving it. They had mad skillz, too, although you had to be super close to see
the magic they were workin' on the 1200s. A must-see event if there ever were one, and
Claire Danes was there, too, so it must have been good.
