The Strokes Win NMEís Album of the Year

New York City rockers, and all around musical heroes, The Strokes, have won NMEís album of the year for their debut album Is This It. The set was one of 50 nominated for the prestigious award, and beat out the likes of the Beta Band, Gorillaz, and Basement Jaxx. Previous winners include Bj?rk, Beck, and Oasis. The Strokes blew up in the UK this year even before their rise to fame stateside, and were featured on the cover of NME twice in six months. Julian Casablancas, The Strokes frontman, is surprised at the praise and support the album has received all over the world. He said, "The fact that people who have never heard it put it on and then keep playing it, blows me away. People we work with are like that; our record company, our publicist...that's fucking weird. It's what I hoped for, but not what I expected." The Strokes upcoming UK tour, set to take place in 2002, sold out in hours.
