Howdy

Howdy has been available in the UK for some time now, but thankfully, we Americans can finally get our hands on it without paying those ridiculous import prices. Available now via Thirsty Ear Recordings, the 12-track album is an exercise in happy, light-hearted pop. Teenage Fanclub's trio of songwriters compliment each other beautifully, making for a cohesive sound and ear-friendly three part harmonies. Multi-layered instrumentals throughout and the use of such uncommon rock instruments as a tuba, a piccolo trumpet and a French horn on scattered tracks create the perfect blend of familiarity and innovation. The opening song, "I Need Direction," is an early 60ís style pop song, complete with Beach Boy background vocals and sing-a-long chorus. "Dumb Dumb Dumb" kicks out a choppy guitar that cleverly pans from right to left after each chord throughout the song. Other favorites include "The Sun Shines From You" and the acoustically-charged "Happiness."
