First of all, the Baldwin Brothers are not a pair of Hollywood starsí musical side project, a la the Bacon Brothers. In fact, none of the band members are actors, brothers, or even named Baldwin. The bandís creative nucleus, Jason Hinkle and TJ Widner, used "Baldwin" as a code word for someone in the know when they were kids, so the name is really just an inside joke. The Baldwin Brothers are, however, no joke at all. Their unique blend of funk, jazz, dance, and electronica was honed to perfection in Chicagoís Wicker Park neighborhood and can now be heard by all on Cooking With Lasers. The album, which is available now on TVT, is packed with fat grooves, ass-shaking beats, and a few special guests to tickle your fancy. Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto, Gorillaz), Angie Hart (Frente!), and Geri Soriano Lightwood (Supreme Beings of Leisure) all lent their superb vocal skills to the album. Cooking With Lasers is held together by tight instrumentation, lead by a bad ass, old-school Fender Rhodes, and the addictive sonic caress of smooth, laid back grooves. Favorites include "Dream Girl," "Ether," and "Are You There Margaret? Itís Me God."
