The Fireside Bowl is an all ages venue in Chicago that has set up shop in an old bowling alley, and itís basically the ONLY place for young rockers to get their groove on in the city. Tom Daily and The Volunteers headlined a show last night at that very venue and I watched it. I really did. Tom and his elite rocking force focused a lot on some new catchy material, which will hopefully be laid to tape and sent out to the masses later this year. Hopefully. Personal favorites from The Burlington Northern disc included ìThe Hitler of Crickets,î ìAllison, Itís True,î and ìThe Kids are Not Alright.î The foxy new bassist (who I later found out was Jeanne McClure, formerly of Mary Tyler Morphine and The Littleman Complex), did not know ìReese Witherspoonî which was a bit of a downer, but I always love when bands deny a fan's ìrequest.î On the upside, Tom and company threw out damaged band shirts throughout the set by asking questions to the audience, and awarding the correct response with a slightly wrecked garment. AND Tom is growing his hair out. In the ë90s, Tom Daily was the singer/songwriter for Not Rebecca, then joined The Smoking Popes before they disbanded, and has released two albums on THICK Records.
