It's that time of year again: time for barely any bands you like to be nominated for the MTV Music Awards. While not all the nominees are abhorrent, the awards ceremony still doesn't exactly mirror the taste of the Tripwire readership, per se. Eminem, Missy Elliott, and San Diego's finest rap-rockers for God, P.O.D., lead the bunch with six nominations apiece. Aside from that, there are some rays of light shining from the abyss of the ceremony, which will be held August 29 at Radio City Music Hall.
The White Stripes are in the battle for the king of them all, the Best Video of the Year category, with "Fell In Love With A Girl," where they will battle it out against the aforementioned Eminem's "Without Me" and "Alive" by P.O.D., plus entries by 'NYSNC ("Gone") and Nas ("One Mic"), as well as the ubiquitous "In The End" by Linkin Park. Other bright spots included nominations for Jimmy Eat World in the Best Rock Video category for "The Middle," The Crystal Method's "Name of the Game" and "Trouble" by Coldplay in the Breakthrough Video category (where they will also face tough competition from the Lego maniacs from The White Stripes) and the entire MTV2 Award grouping, which matches The Hives' "Hate To Say I Told You So" up against "Half Crazy" by Musiq, The Strokes' "Last Nite," "Don't Know Why" by Norah Jones, Nappy Roots & Jazze Pha's "Awnaw" and Dashboard Confessional's emo-tastic heartstring puller "Screaming Infidelities."
