Cover albums can be a mixed bag. If a band you like is performing the album, you're more likely to be into it; conversely, if a band you like is covered to your dissatisfaction, you want to chuck the whole thing at the wall. Never fear. On Ivy's Guestrooom, the good far outweighs the bad, as French chanteuse Dominque Durand and Fountains of Wayne frontman/Crank Yankers jingle writer Adam Schlesinger perform quite well under the covers. A wide range of bands are covered, from Steely Dan to Papas Fritas to Serge Gainsbourg all to varying degrees of success. A number of the tracks are inherently interesting, as Dominque's French-accented purr adds a certain je ne sais quoi to The Cure's "Let's Go To Bed," while "I Don't Know Why I Love You" by House Of Love has a bit of the edge taken off from the original, but a hooky song is a hooky song, regardless of who sings it. Another track done to perfection is The Blow Monkeys' "Digging Your Scene," the groovy vibe remaining, with the female vocal pushing it up just a bit further. Seeing how most house guests out stay their welcome, I'm sure to let Ivy use the Guestroom as long as they wish.
