In commemoration of the seminal band's first live show's 20-year anniversary, The Smiths are being made into cartoons for a UK TV documentary. The retrospective, entitled "These Things Take Time: The Story of The Smiths," will air November 8 on Granada (in case any of you have billion channel satellite service), the TV network that Factory Records and 24-Hour Party People star Tony Wilson used to work for, and feature Vic Reeves as narrator. The show uses animated bits to highlight historical landmarks in the band's history, as it was obviously not all caught on tape.
The show is not completely animated, however, and will also feature interviews with band members Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce as well as radio giant John Peel and past collaborator and hero of Morrissey, Sandie Shaw. The singer himself did not want any part of the documentary and did not allow himself to be interviewed. Rare live performance footage is key to the show, as well as behind-the-scenes shots that will give further insight into one of the most influential alternative bands of the past two decades.
