Jon Stewart, host and executive producer of Emmy and Peabody award winning The Daily Show on Comedy Central, will write and executive produce a new sitcom for NBC which will star fellow Daily Show analyist Stephen Colbert. The duoís dry and intellectual humor will focus on Colbertís upbringing in South Carolina, which will make for a ìmodern day Andy of Mayberry story.î Stewart told Variety, "We're going to try to do a show that has everything that's worked on NBC before. Before it's over, Stephen could end up helming a genial black family. He could be the next Cosby."
Colbert, who has worked for five years as a writer and senior correspondent for The Daily Show, is an alum of The Second City in Chicago, and co-created, executive produced and starred in Strangers With Candy and Exit 57 (both on Comedy Central). Colbert will release his first book Wigfield on Hyperion next spring and the untitled series is being developed for NBC's fall 2003 schedule.
