Who Will Be The Next Guitarist For Blur?

As was widely reported, including here on The Tripwire, Blur are guitar player-less after letting founding member Graham Coxon go late last year. Now, with the axeman search in full gear, Blur kingpin Damon Albarn has told NME that the band has been trying out a number of guitarists, not for full band membership but to play live, and that one has fit in the best so far, a guitarist that is "from a well-known band from the North of England." While you can pretty much rule Noel Gallagher out of that statement, a number of highly interesting names are being run through the rumor mill, including ex-Stone Roses virtuoso John Squire, ex-Smiths genius Johnny Marr and ex-Verve psychedelic soundscapist Nick McCabe. Other names being bandied about are Mark Collins of The Charlatans, ex-Shed Seven man Paul Banks, Embrace guitarist Richard McNamara and Paul Day, founding member of Happy Mondays. Blur bassist Alex James went as far as to say that the band may need TWO guitarists for their live show, but we'll see how it all pans out.
