Live - Supergrass: The Returning Heroes Conquer

The quality music weekend continued in San Francisco as Supergrass and The Coral rolled into this very Anglo-leaning town for a sold-out show. The 'Grass have been favorites here in the City By The Bay since their live premiere in 1995 and this show would be no different. Sadly, I missed the openers from Liverpool, but it was with good reason, as I was at Live 105 listening to Mark Gardener of Ride perform live acoustic songs on air. The Coral and interesting up and coming act, but, come on! This was Mark doing Ride's "Drive Blind" and "Vapour Trail." Truly amazing and leaving me very excited to see Mark's solo acoustic show this Thursday at popscene.

We hurried away from the station with Mark in tow to see his fellow Oxford rockers Supergrass at Bimbo's 365 Club On the ride over, Mark told of the early Jennifers/Supergrass days, when the trio were very young and would consistently hassle Ride to let them play a show together. Fast forward to 2003 and we're walking into a packed club fired up beyond belief to see the one-time would-be openers. The quartet, with frontman Gaz Coombes' brother Rob now a full-time member on keyboards, were stellar on the evening, mixing and matching tracks from all four of their studio albums with great aplomb. "Rush Hour Soul", "Sun Hits The Sky," "Sofa (Of My Lethargy)," "Seen The Light," and "Grace" were amongst the many powerful versions offered up on the night. Even debut album jammer "Strange Ones" was performed, dedicated to the band's staff. The encore was equally mesmerizing, consisting of Mark's favorite, "Moving," as well as the jump-around classic, "Caught By The Fuzz." an amazing show led to a short back stage visit to reunite the band and Mr. Gardener, as well as reacquaint ourselves with Gaz, bassist Micky and drummer Danny, who we had befriended on their first three visits to our fair city, when they were just wide-eyed pups content with getting high in their hotel room and watching, as they called it, the quintessential San Francisco movie, Bullitt. Now, they have families, headline huge festivals and are glorified rock stars. Ahh, how things have changed since those early days...
