Apple Targets Indie Labels For iTunes Expansion

After getting off to a great start – landing licensing deals with the big 5 and selling more than three million songs since April 28 – Apple’s new iTunes store is looking to expand. Apple has invited hundreds of indie label reps to a private presentation at the company’s Cupertino, California campus. In the meeting, taking place this Thursday, Apple will explain exactly how the iTunes store works and will offer the opportunity to take part in some hands-on demos. According to MTV, Sub Pop co-founder Jonathan Poneman and Matador co-owner Gerard Cosloy will be in attendance.


Labels have not yet been presented with the details of the compensation packages, but should many of them sign on, it could give Apple’s iTunes store the most diverse and extensive on-line library today.

In related news, The New York Post has reported that Apple is also in talks to bring their iTunes store to Amazon.com, though neither company has released an official statement addressing the claim.
