KROQís annual Weenie Roast went down on Saturday at a sold out and star-packed, Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, CA. A "Whoís Who" of modern rock were in attendance, as all aspects of the format were represented with main stagers like Godsmack, Foo Fighters, The White Stripes, Staind, Blur, Transplants and more and a side stage full of acts like Chevelle, Interpol, Finch, Thrice, Pete Yorn for starters. California favorites like AFI, Foo Fighters, special guest Janeís Addiction (again? whatís so special?) and Transplants received the most response, but who cares? The backstage scene was what people cared about most, as couples like Jack White/Renee Zellweger and Deryk Whibley (Sum 41)/Paris Hilton were hand-in-hand throughout the night. And it wouldnít be a radio show without controversy as the "easy target" Evanescence backed out at the last moment for "medical" reasons, but weíre thinking that they were smart as the Weenie Roast program and the airwaves of KROQ were nothing but a sounding board for artists and listeners alike to vent their hate towards the loving, rap-rock Christian rock powerhouse.
As for surprises, Pink joined the Transplants for a rousing version of "Get The Party Started" and Liam Lynch, Dave Grohl and Tony from No Doubt ran through a quick version of "United States Of Whatever" immediately following the Foos set. Just as many of the radio shows are getting boring and more of a run through the motion exercise than a performance, the KROQ show delivers with enough good performances, gossip and surprises to keep your interest for another year.
