Duran Duran hadn't played a gig together in 18 years, but on Tuesday night
that all changed when they reunited on the very same stage where they made
their US debut some 22 years ago. An intimate crowd of under 500 bore
witness to the new wave magic that the fab five -- Simon Le Bon, Nick
Rhodes, John Taylor, Andy Taylor and Roger Taylor -- introduced a generation
In recognition of their 25th anniversary, Fader Magazine and DKNY Jeans
invited industry insiders and a select few KROQ listeners to witness the Phoenix rising from the ashes. Those on hand
were offered a smorgasbord of greatest hits including "Hungry Like The Wolf,"
"Planet Earth," "Notorious," "Wild Boys," and an encore of "Girls On Film" and "Rio."
The lads looked fit and sounded like they just stepped off the time
transport from 1985. Le Bon's voice was resonant as ever, even if he
couldn't nail some of the higher ranges.
In a town never short on luminaries a few of the brightest came out for the
exclusive gig. Guests included Beck and girlfriend Marissa Ribisi, Nicholas
Cage, No Doubt's Gwen Stefani (with husband Gavin Rossdale) and bandmate Tony
Kanal, '80s TV heartthrob Christina Applegate and the generation's poster
boy John Cryer (aka Ducky.) After the show, everyone headed over to the
Chateau Marmont to welcome the band back and hoist a few. This was an amazing reintroduction to a long lost friend, and the quintet is currently prepping a new album for 2004 release.
