Sun Studios Dubbed A National Historic Landmark

One day after the death of music industry legend Sam Phillips, the small Memphis upholstery shop he turned into a rock & roll recording studio in 1952 became a National Historic Landmark. Sun Studios, home of Sun Records and launch pad for artists like Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins, has become the very first recording studio in US history to be granted National Historic Landmark status. "By designating Sun Studio as a National Historic Landmark, we also pay tribute to Sam Phillips and his musical legacy," Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenessee, said at the Capitol Hill ceremony marking the landmark designation. As previously reported, Sam Phillips died of respiratory failure Wednesday, July 30. He was 80 years old.
