All good things must come to an end. Last night the UKís Emma ìScoutî Niblett wrapped up a month-long American tour at the Velvet Lounge in the district. I canít think of a better performer to wash away the sadness of the dayís tragic Elliott Smith news. Scout, performing in her customary blonde wig, played a set of mostly new songs from her recent Secret Canadian release I Am (recorded in Chicago by Steve Albini), which has her bouncing back and forth from electric guitar and drum kit.
Scout has drawn many comparisons to Chan Marshall of Cat Power, whom she has teamed up with as tour partner in the past. The sultry and smoky vocals may be so identical, the CIA would have a hard time authenticating one chanteuse from the other. For a split second I wondered if the girl on stage wearing a wig is Chan in disguise, but with Scout avoiding any stage freakouts I know itís the lass from the other side of the pond.
The highlight of the set came during the song ìItís All For Youî where Scout plays the role of cheerleader with a B-boy-esque beat behind the drums and the crowd playing the role of the Bronx zoo, ìgimme an MÖgimme a UÖgimme an SÖgimme an IÖgimme a CÖ this is for the MUSICIANS!î
As the set came to a close, Scout thanked the crowd and people began to line up to buy her custom made t-shirts and copies of the new CD. Her roadie ran back into the club to report their vehicle was just broken into (welcome to Washington) luckily with nothing taken. Even that news didnít keep Ms. Niblett from graciously talking to fans and posing for pictures before heading out to enjoy a few days of R&R in Philly prior to leaving to tour Europe through the end of the year.
