Originally scheduled for release on February 10, Phantom Planet's new self-titled album has been moved up more than a full month. On January 6, Phantom Planet will hit shelves via Epic Records. A spokesperson for the label said the decision to release the album in January was because "radio response was so positive to 'Big Brat' that the demand for new music pushed the release up." Radio programmers and fans alike are going to have a lot to look forward to, as the album was recorded by knob-twister extraordinaire Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, Longwave, Mercury Rev, Mogwai).
The album was recorded in the Amish town of Fredonia, NY, in an Amish-built log cabin deep in the woods - the perfect place to escape the wild LA nightlife and focus on recording without any distractions. The entire album was recorded in just six short weeks and just after a grueling 18-month tour.
Back in LA, the band recruited Spike Jonze and Johannes Gamble of the AV Club (Pete Yorn, Audioslave, The Strokes) to shoot their Zombie movie-inspired video. Makeup artist Tony Gardner (Thriller, The Blob, Three Kings) was brought on for visual effects. It took less than a week to shoot and the result can be seen right here. Check it out.
