Warner/Reprise Testing The Limits Of Online Pre-Sale

NYC-based indie rockers The Secret
Machines will have two release dates for
their forthcoming debut album, Now Here
Is Nowhere.
Beginning today, three
months before its physical release, the entire
album will be available as a download via
various online retailers. As an added bonus
Reprise Records will also give those who
purchase the online version an additional six
free downloads. According to Billboard,
those bonus downloads will be bundled
in the form of a Warner Bros./Reprise up-and-
coming act sampler called Sympathy For
The Download 01
which includes tracks
from The Von Bondies, The
Walkmen, The Sun, Head
Automatica and Johnathan Rice
. In addition, those who purchase the
digital download will also receive a free CD-R
in the mail with exclusive, limited-edition
Secret Machines artwork.

Reprise will be beginning a similar campaign
with The Von Bondies new album, Pawn
Shoppe Heart,
on February 10. However,
the online initiative will start only a month
prior to official street date.

These new advance sale strategies will offer
fans a legal alternative to illegal file-sharing
networks. It's nice to see the industry finally
embracing internet downloads as a viable
source of revenue and planing actual
marketing strategies around it. I hope it
works.
