Metallica Joins 21st Century, Will Offer Live Downloads Online

Perhaps the Interweb isnít the great evil that Metallica once thought. Or, maybe itís just that theyíre getting paid this time around. Regardless, the SF metal gods are following in the footsteps of other web-savvy rockers like Pearl Jam and Phish and are now planning on offering ìofficial bootlegsî for sale on their website. Unedited soundboard recordings are what they are really described as, and starting tonight, theyíll be recorded and be available for sale and download a scant four days later. Metallica is giving their word that each gig will be different, a.k.a., they can sell more copies of the live set, if collectors will dish out the $9.95 for an MP3 set or $12.95 for the concert via FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) format. Each concert will also come with its own downloadable CD booklet, should the buyer want to burn a copy for listening outside the computer realm. Itís a pretty interesting idea and it cuts the bootleggers out of the picture, perhaps forever, as far as Metallica is concerned. Whoíll join the live download bandwagon next?
