The Concretes

Mixing together aspects of Nico, Mazzy Star, Belle & Sebastian, and The Velvet Underground, this Swedish pop ensemble is as varied musically as they are personally (the band is made up of eight people ñ Victoria, Maria, Martin, Ulrik, Lisa, Per, Lydvig, and Daniel). Frontwoman Victoria Bergman is the sonic star of The Concretes, her breathy delivery taking songs into dark and craggy corners heretofore unseen. Pairing the ability to move you emotionally with being hooky enough to cause you to listen again, The Concretes have a special gift. Itís the kind of gift that will doubtless get great press reviews, hipster raves aplenty, and much year-end poll consideration. Will radio get it? Thatís yet to be seen, but if taste is any measure, The Concretes will be solidly represented on the airwaves. The moody atmospheric number ìSay Something Newî kicks the your listening pleasure, and the ride through The Concretesí headspace is continued on the effervescent ìYou Canít Hurry Love,î the brooding ìChico,î the slide guitartastic ìDiana Ross,î and on through the end of the record. Sometimes vibing like a female-fronted, dissonance-free Jesus and Mary Chain-with-organ, The Concretes are ready to blow everyone away with this magnificent offering. The bandwagon starts here. Jump on before it's barrelling downhill at breakneck speed with no time to stop for last-minute converts.
