With the campaign season about to kick into high gear, The Presidents Of The United States Of America have decided to get involved. The band has just announced the first in a series of shows in "swing states" across the country to raise awareness of social and political issues that affect young Americans and to encourage them to vote. Frontman Chris Ballew said, “In the past, we’ve consciously chosen not to engage in political issues, a decision guided by the obvious fact that we’re musicians, not politicians. But given the events of the last few years and what’s hanging in the balance in 2004, we felt we had to get involved.”
These shows will be held in conjunction with Rock The Vote and local modern rock radio stations. The first will be held on August 12 in Milwaukee, WI, with Rock 102 (WLUM), while second is scheduled for September 10 in Kansas City, MO, with 96.5 The Buzz (KRBZ). It was actually Buzz program director and afternoon jock Lazlo who planted the idea in the collective heads of the PUSA, as it was he who first contacted the band last week about doing a voter registration event with his station.
"It's the job of radio stations like ours across the country to motivate young people to vote,” Lazlo said, according to a press release from PUSA management. “We have a responsibility. How better to get that point across than with The Presidents Of The United States Of America? We want to get people motivated and still have fun.”
The Presidents Of The United States Of America are currently in talks with stations in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Iowa, New Hampshire and Florida.
Specific show details and ticket info will be announced by each radio station and will be available on the band's website.
