The Fader had it's party for Issue 24 last night in NYC and things were off the hizzle, as the kids say. M.I.A. was the much anticipated main attraction and she delivered. The packed crowd of NY's finest, sprinkled with the usual crooked hat elite and hipster dufi, got the two song set of "Galang" and "Sunshowa" straight and hard. Her hype-girl yelling, "can you feel this New York?" over the pumping sound system was the perfect accent. The space set for her to perform quickly eroded as the crowd advanced, almost trapping her against her DJ. Digital cameras held above heads just trying to get a glimpse of the spectacle popped with each flashbulb.
As quickly as she came, she was off living up to the old saying, "leave them wanting more". Cliches and free beer aside, it was the place to be. For those who have not heard of her yet, her super-limited debut UK single featured fuzzy, electro-tinged dancehall beats, vaguely political raps, and one of the most unexpectedly catchy hooks in recent memory. Keep your eyes and ears open for this London-based MC, she is about to make some international waves.
