Run To Be Born

After taking a look at the band's name, it immediately conjured up memories of sipping margaritas on a beach in Puerta Vallarta while a troop of mariachis weaved their way through the sun-tanning Americans, serenading them in hopes for a few pesos. However, upon actually listening to the CD, all of those images were instantly replaced with visions of The Kinks, Beck, Bowie, and The Beatles. This band that I'd never heard of was sucking me in with each passing song. They were so tight and well structured - both lyrically engaging and musically stimulating with melodies that stick in your subconscious mind like they were coated with super glue. "These guys are clearly veterans", I told myself. "The songs are just too damn good." Well, it seems I was right. Not to piss anyone off, but I normally don't spend too much time looking at one-sheets (or uh, any time at all, for that matter). I toss in a CD free from outside influence and see what happens. After a single listen to Walking Concert, I literally dug through my office trash to find out who the hell these guys were. As it turns out, Walking Concert frontman Walter Schreifels founded seminal hardcore band Gorilla Biscuits in 1988 at the age of 16. From there, he founded Quicksand, another hardcore act now cited as an influence by just about every hardcore band in the universe. Quicksand was actually one of the first headliners of the Warped Tour. After Quicksand disbanded, Walter went on to form Rival Schools, who released United By Fate through Island Records in 2001. Walking Concert is Walter's latest project. Hints of his hardcore past can be heard in the music of Walking Concert, but that's about as much as you'll get. Instead, Walking Concert draws from the song-writing-driven rock & roll past of classic American popular music. Run To Be Born is an album for a sunny day, a road trip, or a afternoon of tossing back some beers on the porch with friends. If you haven't heard this record yet, you are missing out in a big way.
