Damage

The Blues are still number one. Jon Spencer has made that clear from the first seconds of the opener and title track of their new album Damage. It has been over twelve years since the release of their debut record, and Spencer & Co. are sounding fresh as ever. Yes, they are now simply known as Blues Explosion, but Jon Spencer is still the core of this rock outfit. By enlisting an army of producers, including David Holmes, DJ Shadow, Dan The Automater, Steve Jordan, and Adam Moulder, they have created an album reminiscent of the creativity found on their 1998 album Acme. For fans of the gritty, theremin-filled days of the JSBX, tracks including “Mars Arizona” and “Help These Blues” prove that they can still kick your ass... musically. The biggest surprise may be “Fed Up and Low Down,” which was produced by DJ Shadow. The complex song structure and perfect fusion of rock and turntablism proves this collaboration was made in heaven. With Damage, Blues Explosion are back to the sound that we would expect… filled with sweat, blood, beer, and the blues.
