A Night At The Hip-Hopera

Everyone and their mom is passing the incredibly creative copyright nightmares known as mash-ups around on various P2P networks, over AIM, posting them on blogs, etc. It seems the genre is growing at an exponential rate. Sure, tons of them suck. Rather then creating something new and beautiful out of pre-existing, seemingly-incompatible songs, a great deal of mash-up attempts are just a cluster fuck that ruin all the music involved altogether. But every once in a while, someone comes along as if on a higher plane of existence and molds a collection of tunes together to create something amazing, fun, captivating and just flat out impressive (i.e. DJ Dangermouse, DJ Z-Trip). Like the ancients who discovered that various metals could be melded together to make a single, new metal with the positive characteristics off all the others combined, this new generation of music makers apply the same principle to music. The Kleptones is the next name you need to know from the mash-up underworld (if you can still call it that). Their A Night At The Hip-Hopera blends the extensive catalog of Queen with modern and classic hip-hop and dialogue from your favorite flicks (Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Big Lebowski), along with just about anything else you can imagine. The 23-track mash-up runs about eighty minutes and is full of surprises. For example, "See" blends Queen's "One Vision" with KRS-One's "Hip Hop v. Rap", Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five's "The Message" and Kelis' "Milkshake". "Bite" blends Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust", Justin Timberlake's "Like I Love You" and Ol' Dirty Bastard (w/Kelis)'s "Got Your Money". It goes on and on like this. It's not available in the stores, but A Night At The Hip-Hopera can be downloaded from a variety of websites. Just Google it.
