UNKLE Reign At NYC Gig

As the saying goes, a picture is worth a grand in words? Sumtin like that. How much is transforming a CD into an aural junglegym worth? Well James Lavelle and his boy Richard File brought the UNKLE “Decks’n'EFX Tour” to the Canal Room in NYC last night and deposited quite the bankroll in tunes on a very appreciative crowd. Bringing this music to life is quite the undertaking, and for a non-turntablist like myself, nob turning can get stale, quick. For the DJ subset, UNKLE is the shit. From production to packaging, James’ projects like his Mo’Wax label and collaborations are the gold standard, sight unseen. For the rockers, he generates cred with mixes boasting vocals from the likes of Ian Brown and Thom Yorke. Last night was no exception. Tracks of the new record Never, Never, Land blended in with cuts like the Cult’s “She Sells Sanctuary” and Smashing Pumpkins’ “1979″ so geezers like me could find a mutual reference point. Even Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” opening riff made it into the mix. Live highlights were the extended version of “REIGN” with the aforementioned Ian Brown vocals looping over blistering, more straight ahead, drum sequences, the pumped up “Eye For An Eye”, leaning more on the beats, and less on the soulful vocal loop and dropping Radiohead’s “Ideoteque” right in the middle of it all. “In A State” and the Chris Goss inspired “Safe In Mind” were like icing on the proverbial cake.

Upcoming tour dates include:

10.28.04 – Minneapolis, MN – The Ascot Room
10.29.04 – Chicago, IL – Sound Bar
10.30.04 – Toronto, ON – The Guvernment
11.03.04 – Washington, DC – Club Five
11.04.04 – Seattle, WA – Chop Suey
11.05.04 – Los Angles, CA – Pearl
11.07.04 – Calgary, AL – The Whiskey

The pictures do not do the visuals any justice. Best part of the video loop was the huge UNKLE mural they paint in time lapse stizz. How can I get one of those? Big ups for putting on a blazing show. For those in the tour markets, yo check it. As the track goes, “Run, run, run, but you sure can’t hide”
