Titanium/Can't Do Nothing EP

Right place, right time, ever since I saw them on the "Must See" list for the Reading Festival '04, 10,000 Things has been on my list of bands to check out. The Leeds six-piece has been written up in recent articles with Babyshambles and the Cribs and spotted on the NME Rock and Roll Riot tour in the UK, it seem they're making the right strides. The Cribs even sing on their cover of Gang of Four's "Damaged Goods". Their first single is "Titanium". How can you refute a song who's chorus includes the line, "I think I need titanium boxer shorts, I just can't cope with all these dirty thoughts"? Singer Sam Riley has a whiskey-rocking voice that gives the band the classic "UK band that sound like a America band" sound, think of them as the New Yorkshire Dolls. It's classic verse/chorus rock, the simplicity reminds me of Sultans of Ping which is really saying Iggy and the Stooges. Where the retro sound of The Darkness have tipped towards the higher octaves of Queen, 10,000 Things keep it closer to Marshall stacks and Les Pauls, but with the same sexuality planted firmly in cheek. Other tracks include "Can't Do Nothing", "Loverboy" and and ode to the ladies "Eating's Not Cheating" which I will let you guess is about. It has the term "protein shake" and "edible knickers". Subtle? Since when was rock-n-roll supposed to be subtle?
