Asobi Seksu

Asobi Seksu (Japanese for "play sex") formed in 2002 in New York and have since spent their time gigging around the city at all the right places (Sin-e, Mercury Lounge, etc) opening for all the right bands (Radio 4, Elefant, Stellastarr*, etc.). Their sound has been compared to My Bloody Valentine, Seterolab, and Blondie, which by my account seems to be pretty accurate. However, comparing them to a bunch of older bands that everyone likes doesn't really tell you much, so here's some more detail for you. Frontwoman/keyboardist Yuki Chikudate was born in Japan. She's gorgeous and smart and talented and sings in both English and Japanese, which definitely sets them apart from most. I do realize though that when listening to the record you can't really grasp the gorgeous part. I was lucky enough to catch them live a couple weeks ago, so you'll just have to take my word for it. The music, for the most part, is steeped in the tradition of '80s pop, similar to that championed by Swedish rockers The Sounds. However, Asobi Seksu are a bit more dynamic. They don't hesitate to throw in a couple down-tempo, emotional songs and they even let axe man James Hanna test his vocal might on a couple songs as well. This is a band on the verge getting some meaningful national exposure and the best part is they're even better live, which means they actually deserve it.
