Live - The Arcade Fire, Believe The Hype

The Arcade Fire, could they use any more hype? This band from Montreal, Canada was the talk of CMJ, out buzzing the other 12,000 bands that played. What was the deal? I made it down to the Bowery Ballroom after a previous Interpol gig and was welcomed into a party that the Arcade Fire were hosting. How else could you describe it? Christmas pixie lights, two glowing plastic deers, enough instruments for a marching band [dude, they played a steel drum on one song], and everyone one in the band taking turns playing different ones throughout the night. I would hate to be their roadie. Where's my motorcycle helmet drum? Imagine the Talking Heads, the revivalism of the Polyphonic Spree, enthralling Bjork vocals [check "In the Backseat"], some Flaming Lips, Modest Mouse and Bright Eyes all in a Coussinart. Set to pulse, take out the sh*tty parts from each band you don't like, and you have the Arcade Fire. The one guy, Richard Parry, seriously lets the freak flag fly. Imagine Napolean Dynamite mixed with Bez from the Happy Mondays, bananas! Also, a big ups to Regine Chassagne. This little lady got behind the kit and rocked! Not Mo Tucker-I-have-to-play-the-kick-drum-with-my-hand stizz, Not Meg "handicapable" White simple sh*t. Full tilt. But that's just par for the course for the AF. They rock, they shout, they bag on things, they emote, they all sing amazingly, they have a honest to goodness blast on stage. They have four songs named "Neighborhood", how genius is that? Forget the hyperbole for a second, this is the greatest band ever and all other bands should just hang it up. I keed. But serioiusly, crank "Wake Up" or "Neighborhood #3", or better yet see them play, and feel the glowing warmth of the warmthful glow that is Arcade Fire. Surreal moment of the night: I am sensing the Talking Heads vibe. Singer Win Butler has the anxious tone and only lacks the monster shoulder pad suit when the band plays a Talking Heads cover, "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)". A ha, my thoughts confirmed! Gradually turning to my head to the right in self-gradulatory mode, who is exactly next to me? David Byrne! Eff me! Cosmic. The drunk guy next to me destroyed the moment with a slobbering, "what's it like to hear your own song?" annihilation of the unwritten code on concert conduct. Someone shoot this man.
