Greatest Hits

When most people think of Wales, they usually think of the fish with the biggest d*ck in the ocean, or so says Ali G. But big ups to Goldie Lookin' Chain for putting the country back on the map. Weed smokers watch out, da' eight man Wales crew, known for their Cult of Chav Burberry plaid, are all about blazing up and keepin' it real. What Har Mar is to Prince-inspired funk, GLC is to rap. The accents are probably lost on the US side of the pond, but relative to the UK where Wales gets the short end of the stick in the sarcasm battle, these guys are like a low rent Beasties. But it works. Where the Streets took the "I'm A Real UK Rapper" approach [although rhyming KFC and MickyD's in every tune got stale], GLC would rather be the jester popped up on goofballs, cracking you up with tales of weed dealing with faux bravado about being coked up with the ladies. Greatest Hits is the major label culmination of all their self-released Manifesto and various CD-R singles, both officially and bootlegged. First single "Guns Don't Kill People, Rappers Do" [or as they say, "Wappas do"] was a big hit with the NME and XFM crowd and is pretty much a good indication of the production quality and vocal skillz these guys showcase. Witness tracks like "Your Mother's Got A Penis" and "21 Ounces". Clever? No, but turn them up and try to get down the Welsh slang to use on your homies. There's a video for the R&B send-up of "You Know I Loves You" you can check here. Though the video is more a sleazy poke at stereotypes, most of the tracks have great ideas that work but don't over think this one. This one is for those "room temperature IQ" moments and as they would say 'youknowsit"!
