Life Begins Again

What do you do after you are a drummer for one of the most successful groups in alternative music? Come out with a solo album! Jimmy Chamberlin (ex-Smashing Pumpkins drummer) makes his debut with Jimmy Chamberlin Complex Life Begins Again on Sanctuary Records January 25. At first glance of this album the listener is exposed to a different side of Jimmy. A jazz-fusion record? Yes, a jazz-fusion record. Jimmy manages to take a form of music that most people might not be open to and creates a musical landscape that broadens listeners' horizons to something new. There are some rock songs that the faint of heart might want to digest first before diving into the whole thing. Start with the beautifully crafted title track "Life Begins Again" which features vocals from none other than Rob Dickinson, the man behind Catherine Wheel, along with Jimmy Chamberlin, who makes his vocal debut. The driving vocals mixed with the key and guitar work are what make this song stand out. Next check out lush sounds of track four, "Loki Cat", where ex-bandmate Billy Corgan lends his vocals on a dreamy treat. The best song has to be track eight, "Newerwaves", where Jimmy Chamberlin Complex co-collaborator Billy Mohler takes the mic in what could be one of the best songs I have heard in a long time. Drums pounding, borderline Pixies guitars, and dreamy vocals make for one hell of a song. For those interested in something different, pay attention to track ten, "Lullabye". Recognize whom that is singing? Righteous Brother's Bill Medley sings in classic form on this track. Make sure and take the time to listen to the album in its entirety from beginning to end after checking out those four songs. You might find a new appreciation for different forms of music. I know that I did.
