Due to a run in with a cheeseburger and drinks, I was running late for the show. I arrived at the Bowery Ballroom in just enough time to check out the last three songs of The Honorary Title, the second act on the bill. Their shoe gazing, folk-inspired indie rock was well received by the crowd, who were now filling the room with anticipation for the twin sister pop duo sensation from Canada known as Tegan And Sara. The group was in town to do a performance on The Conan O’Brien Show in support of their new album So Jealous. Backed by a three-piece band, the sisters took the stage. As they were picking up acoustic guitars in preparation to rock, the audience fell into a mesmerizing silence that was shortly broken by an adoring fan that screamed out “cuties” in a “like, duh” tone. It was on. They wasted no time, kicking into the folk inspired "Fix You Up". Next, they started to pick it up a bit with "I Won’t Be Left", which was a precursor to the rock to come - songs like "I Bet It Stung" and "Speak Slow". Both Tegan And Sara switched between acoustic and electric guitars and shared the lead vocal role throughout the night. They performed with confidence and patience, allowing the songs to speak for themselves. The audience was treated between songs to dialogue that revealed the personal origins of some songs off the new album. Other songs performed from So Jealous were "Walking With A Ghost", "I Know I Know I Know", "Where Does The Good Go", and my favorite track of the night "So Jealous". This song was performed with intensity as the chorus was almost screamed with a frantic shrill “I get so jealous”. They will be playing tonight (January 13) in Asbury Park, NJ, then hit the road again February 2 to play some US and Canadian dates. Catch one if you can.
