Ringo Man? Super Starr? The Great Starrino? Mega-Ringo? Starr Man? Startacula? It looks like Ringo Starr is turning himself into an animated superhero. According to Billboard, Starr is working with Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment to create a multimedia franchise based around a superpowered All-Starr band. The project is initially for a DVD release, but feature films and other TV possibilities are currently being looked at as well. The former Beatles drummer will not only voice his own character, but will also contribute original songs.
Unlike his appearances on ABC’s 1965-67 cartoon The Beatles and the 1968 animated feature Yellow Submarine, this marks Starr’s first significant animated feature voiced by himself. Of course, we can’t exclude his appearance on a 1991 episode of The Simpsons.
In discussing his new character, Starr said he would play more of a “reluctant superhero.” He continued: “I'll zoom in to save the world or a damsel in distress or a small village. Who knows where he'll go?" Will he be able to leap over small buildings with a single tap of a snare drum? We can only hope.
