As Best We Can

When I asked the band's press contact how to pronounce their name, she said, "pretty much how you say it - s n m n m n m, but fast so it rolls". Needless to say, I still have no idea. What I do know however, is that this band from Chapel Hill, NC, doesn't have a bass player. Instead they have an amplified tuba player that provides the band with bass lines. Interestingly enough, it doesn't sound as weird and distracting as you'd think. Three of the band's four members are classically trained musicians, so the instrumentation and vocal harmonies (provided by all four members) are extremely tight. The songs are catchy, quirk pop tunes with nasaly, nerd rock vocals and an endearing quality that will make you smile all the way to the tuba store. All of the tracks, except the last one, end with an exclamation point, so apparently when I tell you my favorite songs are "Disco Barry!" or "My Defense!" (which they are), I'm supposed to YELL IT AT YOU!. Looking past the novelty factor of the tuba though, this is actually a quality pop record from a talented group of guys and worth spending some time with.
