After self-releasing a pair of self-recorded EPs on their own label, the three members of Mobius Band suddenly found themselves out of the forests of their Shutesbury, Massachusetts, hometown and into the recording studio of one Peter Katis. You may have heard of some of the other bands he’s worked with, ie. Interpol, Rainer Maria. Ring a bell? The band has also found a label to call home in Ann Arbor, MI-based Ghostly International, through which they will release the City Vs Country EP next week (March 8). The five-song EP is an amalgamation of electronica and shoegazer rock & roll that is sure to be a hit with the cool kids. The opening track, “Starts Off With A Bang”, does exactly that. The electronic elements are clear right from the beginning, as some blip bleeps and a drum machine are the first sounds the listener is exposed to. The song’s melancholy chorus broods, “So… Sick Of Music, Sick Of Music”, but thankfully, that sentiment didn’t prevent the band from finishing off the EP with four more stand out tracks. From the bombastic chorus of “Year Of The President” to the spaced out electronica of “Multiply” to the driving guitar rock of the title track, City Vs Country is an EP that will waste no time in getting your attention. I’m very much looking forward to hearing more from Mobius Band and will likely be stopping by their SXSW showcase to see how three guys can pull off this thick textured sound in a live setting. See you there?
