Live - The Fatales Play Pianos

The weather took a much-needed break this weekend. Saturday evening was a great night for a show, and what a show did I go to. The venue: Pianos. The band: The Fatales. Luckily I got there a little early, because if I didn’t then I doubt I would have gotten in to see them. This was my first time to check them out live; The Tripwire has been singing their praises for a while, especially on their EP Pretty In Pixles that came out last year. Apparently it has been a long time since the lads have played, and the audience was packed to the rafters. With good reason too I might add. As soon as the band took the stage the onlookers hushed and prepared themselves for quite a show. It has been a while since I have been to a show with a projection screen, and very few bands pull it off. Sometimes I feel bands use them to distract the listener, but in the case of the Fatales it worked…make that fit…perfectly. Images of static screen television meeting modern art filled the back wall, while the music filled the room. I would have to describe the music as what a 1980’s version of Radiohead’s guitars mixed with the vocal styling of Interpol. Highlights included “Where’d You Get Those Shoes” and the blip-bloop goodness of “The Cosmonaut”. My one complaint was that I wish there was more room so I could have gotten my dance on! I would highly suggest seeing them live; they are playing New York again on April 26 at Rothko. Mark your calendars.
