The Road Leads Where It's Led EP

I claim to be one of the first fans of Secret Machines. Yeah, I know it sounds a little pretentious, but I don't care. Spending my college days in Dallas/Fort Worth and working at my college radio station I became familiar with a lot of the local bands. One of those local bands in particular, Captain Audio, stood out to me. The perfect pop songs that were both uplifting and indie-cool were awesome. They were hard workers and always put their music first. Not too many young bands submerse themselves so wholeheartedly into their work, and it was amazing to see Captain Audio do just that. Fast forward a few years later and that very same Captain Audio went through some changes in lineup, moved to New York via Chicago, and changed names to what most people know now as Secret Machines. The trio quickly became signed to Reprise and released one of my favorite albums of last year, Now Here Is Nowhere. On the heels of that release the band has now put out a retail EP, The Road Leads Where It It's Led EP. Six songs make up the album with the title album track, and four cover songs. They are not your typical cover songs I might add. In true Secret Machines fashion they interpret the song into their own melodies and deliver something fresh and different. The most surprising was "Money (That's What I Want)" that was originally recorded by Brandon Mason. Slow beats and lingering vocals surround the listener. If I didn't know what this song was, I would have never guessed it. As a matter of fact, most of the songs on here (sans "The Road Leads Where It's Led") are pretty downbeat, much like the bands first EP, September 000, and that includes the new "Better Bring Your Friends". Overall this is a pretty cool EP and a must have for any Secret Machines fan.
