It has been a while since we heard from Turin Brakes. While their new album manages to fit in perfectly with Astralwerks' current roster (bands like Sondre Lerche, Athlete, and Phoenix are definitely in the same vein), don't let that fool you. Turin Brakes have that special spark that makes them stand out on their own. When they first came on the scene they were one of several bands in the same category as them. Now, they are one of the remaining ones out there. Once using the production work of Tony Hoffner (Air, Beck) they found that for this release they wanted more of a homegrown feel. That is exactly what they got on this, their third album, JackInABox. The band recorded, wrote, self-produced, and engineered it all in a small studio in Brixton. The album is full of sun drenched harmonies and earnest song writing. Tracks such as "Red Moon" and the first single, "Fishing For A Dream" showcase heartfelt emotion that comes across with ease and humility. Another stand out track is "Over And Over", which focuses on being more upbeat with '60s pop guitars and toe tapping melody. The duo have definitely spent their time and come across more soulfully than prior efforts, but they also manage to retain the quality as well. The last cut on the album also features a hidden track with beautiful haunting sounds that are found nowhere else on the album. JackInABox is the perfect soundtrack for laying in a field and cloud counting with the one you love.
