Innaway

There have been several noteworthy releases that have come out this year and most of them end up sounding the same if you really think about it. Don't get me wrong; I too fall guilty for being madly in love with the new generation of "British Invasion" that has been dominating everyone lately. However, believe me when I say that it is pretty fucking refreshing to hear something that stands out and is totally different. It has the same feeling of when you are rummaging through that local vinyl record store and you found a rare original pressing of some band that no one ever knew existed. Which brings me to Innaway. Yes, Innaway hail from Southern California, but don't let that make you think that their music is all sun glistened, poppy, and summery. Their use of past bands as influences (such as Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin) is apparent, and it manages to mix nicely with newer obvious influences like Tortoise and Radiohead. While there is that evident touch of bleeps and bloops, it is hard to deny the presence of the stoner/ classic rock quality that the first half of the album really possesses. Now, I must say that before that makes you run away, Innaway brings a different approach to the stoner rock guitars. That is to say, one that gives the sound life and creativity all while focusing on breathy vocals. Songs like "Threathawk", "Rise" and "North Egg" feature just that. On the other spectrum the band's creative juices were running rampant with songs like "Golden" and "Tiny Brains" that both boast a stunning electronic beat and down tempo chill. It comes as no surprise since the band has played with everyone from Blonde Redhead to Dios Malos and John McEntire (Stereolab, Sea And Cake) lent his hands on mixing the album. There is one small request I have to make, and that is if you listen to the album make sure that you do it in an entirety. Do not skip tracks; do not fast forward through songs. This one is made for the long haul (all 53 minutes) and should be meant for enjoying as a whole work of art. Oh yeah, and don't forget to catch the guys when they go on tour with Brian Jonestown Massacre this August.
